ELK RIVER--AREA 29 GROOMER REPORT

REMEMBER THAT THE AREA YOU REGISTER YOUR SNOWMOBILE IN RECEIVES THE FUNDS TO SUPPORT THE GROOMER OPERATION. AREA 29 IS DOWN ON REGISTRATIONS SO PLEASE SUPPORT AREA 29 BY CHECKING THE AREA 29 BOX.

October 2012--The nights are getting cold and fall is in the air. The snow will be arriving soon. Looking forward to adding information for snowmobile riders who plan to visit Area 29. Grooming does not begin until December.


December 6, 2012--It's snowing!!  Grooming cannot begin until December 15th of each year but the state requires at least 18 inches of snow at the groomer shed before grooming can begin.

December 27, 2012--The snow is piling up and the groomer is preparing to head out. Watch here in the                                      coming days for a report of which trails have been groomed. 


December 28, 2012--The groomer is out today. Watch here for report of which trails get cleared.


December 29, 2012--On Thursday night (12/27), the groomer went out to Captain's Cabin, Elk Butte, Windy and down the Basin. On Friday the groomer went over Hemlock, around Iron Gate Loop and back down Basin. Morris Creek and Shattack will be opened when there's enough snow.


December 30, 2012--The groomer went out to Captain's Cabin to Big Green and back to Captain's Cabin, from there to Elk Butte and across Windy to the Bummy Mart, back to Captain's Cabin and back down to the Airport. The snow conditions are great. It was foggy in places. There are lots of riders on the mountain and Elk River is full for the New Year. Best wishes to all for a safe and happy New Year. 


Welcome 2013!


January 2, 2013--The trails in Elk River were good today, clear and very cold.  The groomer went out from the Airport, up the Basin,over Hemlock,around Iron Gate, back over Windy to Elk Butte, down to Captain's Cabin and back in.  There is a good  base so we are ready for more snow.


January 12, 2013--The groomer was out all day Friday and went from the Airport to A and up the Basin to E - N and M, over Hemlock to K down East Fork to J up to K around Irongate Loop to L and back down the Basin. See printable map at the top of this page.


The groomer will be heading out this afternoon for a night run. It is planning to go from the Airport to B, up Diamond to H - G - and R (Captain's Cabin), to Q - P (Elk Butte), out Windy to O - M - back to Windy down to Bummy Mart to Q and back to Airport. There's 5 to 6 inches of new snow and lightly snowing this morning.  The SnoDrifters are hosting a raffle run in Elk River on Sunday. Night run complete as planned. There was at least 12 inches of fresh powder up there and it was very cold tonight. It hit 2 degrees. 


January 13, 2013--The groomer opened up Shattack today. The groomer left Airport to A - C - D - E and back to the Airport. The snow conditions are good.


January 16, 2013--The groomer is scheduled out for the next three days so all trails should be groomed and ready for the weekend. The Shattuck loop was opened on Sunday and Burma Road which is down toward Granddad will be opened on Thursday. If riders go on down to Granddad please report the snow depth to Brian at Elk Butte Recreation. The groomer cannot groom trails if the snow is less than 18 inches deep.


January 24, 2013--Today the groomer went out from the Airport to B, up Diamond to H - G - and R (Captain's Cabin), to Q - P (Elk Butte), out Windy to  Bummy Mart to Captains's Cabin and back to Airport. The trails are in excellent shape with a couple inches of new snow. The weather today was beautiful and sunny. Get out there and enjoy the snow.


January 25, 2013--Today's grooming went well. It was a cross between rain and snow. More on the rain side; if it freezes the trail will set up very hard. The groomer went from Airport to A - C - D - E - N - M - L - K - J - by the horse corals outside Gold Center, back across the Iron Gate,then to Windy back down the Basin. 


January 31, 2013--The groomer was out today and it was extremely foggy. The groomer went from the Airport to A -  H - G - R (Warming Hut @ Captain's Cabin) - Q - P (Elk Butte) - out Windy to O -M (top of Basin) - down to the Bummy Mart back to Q and back to the Airport. There was 12 to 14 inches of new snow which is heavy wet snow. The trail conditions are excellent. 


February 8, 2013--The groomer was out Friday morning to prepare the airport for the drag races.  Then Friday evening/night the groomer went out Diamond, Lookout, Windy over to L back to Elk Basin, G. Cedar, and Diamond -H- and back to town.    (Airport to B-H-P-O-M-L-M-N-E-A-B-H-B and back to Airport) There is only a half a inch of new snow in town but 4 to 5 inches up top.

 

February 15, 2013--The groomer went out on Friday from the Airport to A - E - N- M (top of Basin) - L - K - J (East Fork) - back to K (Iron Gate Loop) - back to M - back down Basin to Airport.


February 16, 2013--The groomer went out Saturday night from the Airport up to B - H - G - R (Captains Cabin) to Q - P - U - back to Q - R - G - H - B and back to Airport. 


February 21, 2013--The groomer went out today from the Airport up to B - H - G - R (Captain's Cabin) - Q - P (Elk Butte) - O - M (Top of Basin) - Bummy Mart - Q - R - Big Green - R - G - H - B  and back to Airport


February 27 2013--The groomer went out today from the Airport up to B - H - G - R (Captain's Cabin) - Q - P (Elk Butte) - O - M (Top of Basin) - Bummy Mart - Q - R - Big Green - R - G - H - B  and back to Airport. High up on the mountain the snow is good; lots of fresh snow.


February 28, 2013--The groomer is going out today from the Airport to A - E - N - M - Top of Basin - L - K - J back to K - Iron Gate Loop - M and back to Airport. Shattack will no longer be groomed this season as a portion of the road has caved off. (Shattack is E - D - C - A). Snow is falling this morning so the riding should be prime. Enjoy!!


March 7, 2013--The groomer went out today from the Airport up to B - H - G - R (Captain's Cabin) - Q - P (Elk Butte) - O - M (Top of Basin) - Bummy Mart - Q - R - Big Green - R - G - H - B  and back to Airport. There's about 3 inches of fresh snow


March 8, 2013--The groomer went out over Shattuck, up the Basin, across to R (Captain's Cabin) G - H - B and back to Airport. There was a good sized group out snowmobiling on Friday and they were having a ball. The groomer followed them back to town so the trails are ready for the weekend.


March 21, 2013--The groomer went out today and experienced extreme winter conditions.Trails were groomed from A to E to N to M (top of Basin); to L (Hemlock Butte) to K then back to M  (top of Basin) to O to P (Elk Butte) to Q - R - G - H and back to the Airport.There is about 14 to 16 inches of new snow on top of the Basin. Several trails were not groomed due to drifting. The groomer is out of commission for a bit while a part is ordered. Weather permitting it will be back out there soon. Once the snow leaves the Airport so the groomer cannot get to the snow the season will be over.



be aware of pink ribbon caution markers on trails which indicate extra caution at that location
