                  News from the SALMON RIVERSNOWMOBILE

Club Meeting

 OCTOBER 5, 2011

New Business:

Memberships are due we will send out forms with this month’s minutes.  We need to have them paid before convention.

This year's ISSA Convention is November 4 and 5 in Coeur D’Alene.

Gary and Charline will be attending.  To expedite membership receipts, you can go to www.idahosnow.org and visit the club page and download the form and send it in.

Bridge repairs –

  1. Valley Creek Bridge behind the flats – Gary worked on and repaired.  It will need more repairs in the next couple of years.
  2. Elk Creek Bridge – Is not in danger this year of being washed out, but the Stanley Lake side of the bridge is starting to erode in high water and will need some rip rap.
  3. Valley Creek Bridge at the end of Cow Camp Lane – This bridge is in serious need of repair and will require the approval of the Forest Service to repair.  High water has begun washing away the bank on one end and may require a complete new bridge or getting in the water to repair.  Gary will work with the Forest Service on this.

Trail maintenance – we will need to check trails and do some clearing before we get too much snow.

A work day with a club picnic is planned for Saturday, October 15 for the Bear Valley/Lowman/Deadwood trails.  We will meet at the parking lot at 10 a.m.  Bring chainsaws, gloves, trucks or four wheelers.

Move the warming hut – before the snow flies too much.  We may need to do a little woodpecker damage repair.   Gary is still working with the Lowman Ranger Station to get the cabin at Elk Creek just past the guard station.

We received 50/50 tickets from the ISSA that individuals can purchase.  Tickets are $2 each and the winner will be drawn at the convention in Coeur d’Alene in November.  If you are interested in them, get with me before October 25.  The convention is November 5 & 6.

Possible raffle items – Any ideas?  Gary has started looking for items and prices.  Discussion was held that we will probably not raffle a big item this year, but several smaller separate items.  The idea is to get things like a KLIM clothing package, a chainsaw, a top of the line helmet or any other ideas that someone can come up with.  We would have the big items with separate tickets and people could choose where to drop their tickets and the rest of the donated items would go in the door prize bucket.  It would cost us $9,000 to $10,000 for a sled and more than that for a trailer.  With the economy the way it is, this might make more money for the club.  Email yfhst@ruralnetwork.net or bring ideas to the next meeting.

We received a request for a calendar of event for winter so that the Chamber can help promote them and Stanley.

The Toy, Food and Pet Food Drive to support Helping Hands of Custer County will be December 10, 2011.  A Fun Run is scheduled for January 14 (weather permitting – no one wanted to ride the past couple of years at 30 below zero).  Details coming soon.  The Snowmobiler’s Ball and Fun Run will be February 18, 2012.

Last year the Sawtooth Community Winter Recreation Partnership Committee and the Forest Service obtained grants to purchase large maps to put on kiosks at specific parking lots.  These signs are 4’ X 4’ and would mount on the kiosks.  Bear Valley Parking Lot was one of the maps made that say “you are here” with directions to Lowman, Deadwood, and Stanley.  Charline suggested that the club make the kiosk sign board to mount the map on.  We will obtain donated materials and donate the labor to make this kiosk.  It will be removable in the spring so it can be used again.

Several questions are being asked about who is running the groomer this year.  Please refer those to the City of Stanley until they make any announcements.  Also, the roof at the groomer shed did not get repaired and some of the tin is coming off.  If someone wants to volunteer, they are welcome to go fix it.

Gary Gadwa was a guest visitor to the meeting to talk about the Wolverine Research Project that is coming to Bear Valley this year.  There is an article in the current issue of the SnowBiz detailing what they plan to do.  They would like to have people check out GPS tracking devices to see where we ride and plot that on a map.  At the same time, they are capturing and collaring wolverines so they can track where the wolverines are travelling and denning.   They want this data so they can determine if snowmobiling and/or skiing effect the wolverines.  They will have one set of trackers for skiers and one for snowmobilers.  Gary will come to future meetings to keep us on top of the program and its progress.  The ISSA is behind this study to show that we have no impact on the wolverine.

Thanks to Eve and Johnny Ray for sticking around a couple of extra days to host the meeting!!

Next meeting will be November 2 at Mountain Village General Manager’s Office at 6:30 p.m.
